Friends, New & Old

One of FCI's Transnational Partners is here in the good ol' U S of A right now. He's in our area for a few days. Guess where he's from?! Yep. Uganda! Guess who got to host dinner for him and some of our friends tonight? Yep. The Bakers (that would be us...in case you were wondering).

I made chicken & noodles with mashed potatoes (I thought it would be fitting to expose him to some Indiana culture. HA!) and green beans. We had brownies (thanks for the recipe, Mom!) for dessert.

Want to know what he said about our house? "Wow! You have TWO living rooms."

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing what Fred had to say. I thoroughly enjoyed his accent and his pleasant nature. I am absolutely honored that we were given the privilege and blessing to have him in our home.

And now I am itching even more than before to visit his country. Only 90 more days!!!

Some interesting (and rather convicting) facts about Fred:
  • He started an orphanage because he kept having dreams of children crying and screaming. He asked God why he was having these dreams and God told him to care for the orphans.
  • 400 children attend school at Fred's orphanage. 150 live there, 250 walk from all over (some 3 hours, one way, barefoot) so they can learn and eat 2 meals.
  • Fred said he has children every day ask if they can please live at his orphanage, but Fred is out of resources and facility space.
  • Fred pays for a lot of these things with his own money, money he earns by his chicken farm or money he accumulates by selling his own personal possessions and property.

What did he think of the chicken and noodles? Wonder if Ugandan food is as spicy as the food in Sierra Leone?

I didn't ask him if he liked it and he didn't offer any opinion.

I'll find out if their food is spicy and let you know in December when I get home! :)
